The Story of AMT
In 1952, young actor and director Paul J. Curtis created the American Mime Theatre in New York. With training from Erwin Piscator at The New School in the 1940s and incorporating the influences of modern dance and American acting methods of the time, Paul developed a unique kind of mime with its own aesthetic principles and training methods.
In an ever-evolving collaborative effort, Paul and many American Mime performing companies over the years created plays utilizing all means of expression through ‘acting in form’. And through several decades and thousands of students, the American Mime Theatre School has had an undeniable influence on the acting profession and performers of all kinds.
